[Please reply directly to Kathy Piercy]

I am looking for a graduate student who is doing a thesis or
dissertation project in aging that uses qualitative methods. It needs to be
a student who will be attending GSA in Nov. and is willing to be part of a
symposium panel for the qualitative methods interest group. This student's
role would be to discuss his or her experiences in doing qualitative
research for a thesis or dissertation project.

I need to work this out as soon as possible.

Responses can be made to me at kathyp@cc.usu.edu

Thank you for your assistance.

Call for Nominations to the Committee on Aging

The American Psychological Association's Committee on Aging (CONA) is
seeking nominations for two new members to begin terms in January 2001.
The committee concerns itself with furthering the major purpose of APA to
advance psychology as a science and profession and as a means of promoting
human welfare by ensuring that older adults, especially the growing numbers
of older women and minorities, receive the attention of the Association.

Committee members plan, develop, and coordinate various activities related
to impacting the status of older adults. CONA is interested in persons
with demonstrated interest and experience in aging issues to serve a
three-year term beginning in January 2001 and ending in December 2003.
CONA is committed to ensuring the representation of all constituencies
within the APA. Areas of expertise divided among the members encompasses
academic experience, clinical experience, and research experience. Each
year, new members are selected based on their qualifications vis-à-vis the
particular slate requirements for that year. This year, the committee is
interested in having candidates from diverse groups apply for the two
openings.

Selected candidates will be required to attend two committee meetings a
year in Washington, DC, with expenses reimbursed by the APA. Members also
work on Aging Committee priorities when necessary between meetings. If
possible, members attend a CONA meeting at their own expense held during
the APA Convention.

Nomination materials should include the nominee's qualifications, a letter
from the nominee indicating willingness to serve on CONA and a current
curriculum vita. APA nominations are open to members who are retired or
employed less than full time. Nominations and supporting materials should
be sent by August 1, 2000, to Weldon Bagwell of the APA Public Interest
Directorate, 750 First Street NE, Washington, DC, 20002-4242.

Subject: JOBS: Multiple tenure track positions at Ga. Tech.
To: IOGTALK@LISTS.WAYNE.EDU

The School of Psychology at Georgia Institute of Technology plans to add up to
five new faculty this year in the areas of Industrial/Organizational,
Cognitive-Aging and Engineering Psychology/Human Computer Interaction. There
is some flexibility in rank but preference is for junior candidates.

Industrial/Organizational. We plan to fill up to two positions in I/O. The
candidate's record of scholarship, productivity and expertise are more
important than specific research area within I/O psychology. We are looking
for scholars with a strong record of publication or potential for one. The
I/O
group has a good working relationship with the College of Management and
connections to many of the larger companies in the Atlanta area. Address
applications to I/O Search Committee.

Cognitive Aging. Candidates with expertise in any area of cognition and aging
are encouraged to apply; demonstrated excellence in published research and a
clear potential for establishing a program of publishable and funded research
at Georgia Tech are essential. The Cognitive Aging program represents a major
research and educational focus of the School and is represented by one of the
world's largest groups of faculty specifically focused on cognitive aging.
The
program has considerable research funding in addition to an institutional
training grant from NIA funding both predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees.
Address applications to Cognitive-Aging Search Committee.

Engineering Psychology/Human Computer Interaction. This position is
primarily
psychology but is a joint appointment with the College of Computing. The
applicant's research area must fit within an identifiable or emerging area in
both engineering psychology/human factors and human computer interaction. The
candidate is expected to participate in the Graphics, Visualization, and
Usability Center (GVU), which is an interdisciplinary program administratively
housed in the College of Computing. It is anticipated that the appointment
will be 75% in Psychology and 25% in the College of Computing.
The Engineering Psychology program and GVU maintain active collaboration with
other programs within the School of Psychology as well as numerous other units
of Georgia Tech. In addition, the programs maintain a wide variety of
links to
the industrial and business research community in the metropolitan Atlanta
area. Address applications to Engineering/HCI Search Committee.

Quantitative. This position will be for someone with expertise in
multivariate
statistics and structural equation modeling. The research content area is
open
but must fit with one of the emphasis areas of the School. Address
applications to Quantitative Search Committee.

Successful candidates will reflect the School's emphasis of quantitative
statistical applications, empirical research, and technical innovation in
research methods. Salary and start-up funds will be commensurate with
experience and are highly competitive.

The School of Psychology, located in the College of Sciences, has 20 full-time
faculty and offers doctoral training in three areas: I/O Psychology,
Engineering Psychology and Experimental Psychology (with emphasis in Cognitive
Psychology, Cognitive Aging, and Animal Behavior). Applicants are encouraged
to read our web page at www.psychology.gatech.edu. Deadline for
applications is
November 1, 2000 but the searches will remain open until the positions are
filled. Send curriculum vita, reprints, statement of research interests, and
three letters of reference to the appropriate search committee, School of
Psychology, 274 5th St., Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA

WANTED: Reviewers for Student awards

As you probably know, Division 20 of APA and the Retirement Research
Foundation sponsor a student research award competition. The awards are for
proposed or completed research at the undergraduate, graduate or
postdoctoral level. Submissions are due on May 30 this year.

We are asking for volunteers to help review submissions.
Volunteer reviewers will receive 2 to 6 submissions early in June (the more
volunteers, the smaller the load!) and reviews will be due back a few weeks
later. The reviews consist of rating the paper along a number of dimensions,
plus written comments.

If you are willing to participate as a reviewer, please send an email to
Leslie Frazier <frazier@fiu.edu> as soon as possible. Leslie is
coordinating the review process. Please provide your name, mailing address
for June(for express mail), EMAIL address, and a list of content areas in
which you feel competent to review.

Please be willing to provide this service to Division 20. It will require a
small amount of your time and it will help to support a wonderful student
awards program that has been quite successful!

Thanks very much-- Robin West

Division 20 and the Retirement Research Foundation are sponsoring two
Mentorship Awards in 2000.

The Master Mentor award ($5,000) shall be presented to an established
figure in the field who has had a significant impact on the development of
the careers of students and junior colleagues in the psychology of adult
development and aging. This will be an individual who has been a full
professor for at least 10 years. The Master Mentor award will be based on
the mentoring qualities represented by that individual as well as the
breadth and depth of the individual's impact on the field. The winner will

someone whose students have also begun to have some influence as well.
The Mentor award ($2500) shall be presented to an individual who has
consistently provided support, guidance, and strong direction to
undergraduate and graduate students in aging and adult development. This
individual might be someone who resides at a liberal arts institution or
college that focuses on undergraduate education or it may be an individual
