Dear Colleagues,
We all recently received the message below from Fred Wolinsky
concerning
the good news of an increase in page numbers in the Journal of
Gerontology: Social Sciences. You will be pleased to know that this
increase extends to the Journal of Gerontology: Psychological Sciences
as
well. We are grateful to the GSA for their wisdom and foresight in
recognizing this critically important medium of our field. I believe we
shall all benefit from this increase in page allocation and encourage
you
to submit your very best work to the Journals of Gerontology.

To all undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students in Division
20:
The organizers of the 1998 Cognitive Aging Conference (CAC) have given
us permission to have a Division 20 informational booth at this year's
conference. This provides us with a wonderful opportunity to advertise
our division and recruit new members. It also provides students with
the chance to get involved in division activities by volunteering to
work at the informational booth.
Volunteers will answer questions about the division (e.g., benefits of
being a member, costs of membership, etc.), recruit new members, and
meet other researchers interested in aging. As a special incentive, all
volunteers will be entered into a free CAC tee-shirt raffle. The lucky
student who wins the raffle will be awarded the tee-shirt at the end of
the conference.
Show your pride and support for Division 20 by becoming a volunteer!
The
formal program begins on Thursday, April 23 and ends on Sunday, April
26. As was the case in 1996, CAC is being held in downtown Atlanta,
Georgia. If you would like more information or would like to sign up to
become a volunteer, please email Lisa Jenkins, the Division 20
Postdoctoral Representative at ljenkins@artsci.wustl.edu or call (314)

Dear Colleagues: We have a new summer funding opportunity (at least 20

main categories of activity during the summer: (a) assistance with the
coding and scoring of some data, (b) national support to other clinical
trial sites on some coding issues, (c) supervision of project staff

and (d)
some telephone interviewing.
Although the current position is intended for the summer only, STUDENTS
WHO
DEVELOP A SUBSTANTIVE INTEREST IN THE PROJECT MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR A

for
3-4 years.

WANTED: Reviewers for Division 20 Student/Postdoctoral Research
Award Submissions
As you are probably aware, Division 20 is once again sponsoring a
student research award competition. This year, the submissions for
awards are due on May 22. As in years past, we are asking
for volunteers to help the Committee in reviewing submissions.
Volunteers will receive from 1 to 6 submissions (the more
volunteers, the smaller the load!) around the beginning of June, with
reviews being due about 3-4 weeks later. The reviews themselves
consist of ratings on a number of dimensions along with a short
commentary. If you are willing to participate as a reviewer, please
send me an email (hess@poe.coe.ncsu.edu) to that effect ASAP.
Include in your email your mailing address (for express mail) and a
list of content areas in which you feel competent to review
submissions.
Please consider helping. The student awards program has been very
popular and successful, but its continued success depends upon
your assistance.
Thank you in advance!

We are interested in utilizing a measure of knowledge
of dementia -- its symptoms, ways of dealing with
behaviors associated with it, etc. -- as part of our
in-service training of nursing assistants/nurse aides
in our long-term care facility. I was hoping that I could

UNIVERSITY
Opportunities are available for a post-doctoral research associate to
work
with Dr, K. Warner Schaie and/or Dr. Sherry L. Willis on several
projects
related to adult cognitive development, The projects include:
1) The Seattle Longitudinal Study, a 40-year study of adult cognitive

offspring and siblings of the longitudinal panel, relating psychometric
to
neuropsychological data, genetic markers, and post-mortem analyses of
the
relation of structural anatomical changes to earlier behavioral data.
2) Everyday Problem Solving. A five-year study examining cognitive
processes associated with IADL tasks of daily living with low educated
normal and early Alzheimer's patients. Change in everyday problem
solving
over a four-year period is examined.
3) Our laboratory is a field site for the recently NIA funded
cooperative
trial on cognitive interventions in aging.
4) Research is beginning on the development of cognitive-based training
programs for older drivers.
Requirements include the completion of a Ph.D. in adult development
and/or
quantitative methodology in the behavioral sciences. Familiarity with
multivariate statistics and particularly structural equations modeling
isessential. Starting date for this position is negotiable, but a

POST-DOC Opening in Cognitive Psychophysiology.
The NIMH Training Program in Cognitive Psychophysiology in the
Department of Psychology, and the Beckman Institute, at the
University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign will have an opening
for a post-doctoral trainee, beginning August 20, 1998. The
appointment is for the period of one year, renewable to two.
The rate of pay is at the NIMH determined scale, and depends on
the year at which the Ph.D. was awarded. Trainees must be
citizens, or permanent residents, of the United States.
Our program is designed for psychologists who have not been
trained in psychophysiological techniques and who are interested
in incorporating the measures and concepts of Psychophysiology,
and Cognitive Neuroscience, in their research. Trainees in the
program have had their primary interests in virtually all areas
of Psychology: Cognitive, Aging, Clinical, Developmental,
Engineering Psychology, Social. Trainees participate in the
research programs of one, or more, of the program faculty,
participate in a weekly program seminar and partake of the very
rich offerings in the Department of Psychology, the Beckman
Institute, and the campus-wide interdisciplinary programs in
Neuroscience and in Cognitive Science.
The program faculty includes Marie Banich, Neal Cohen, Michael
Coles, Emanuel Donchin, Susan Garnsey, Wendy Heller, Art Kramer
and Greg Miller all from the department of psychology as well as
