APA Student Affiliate and Convention Registration Waiver

I want to encourage students to consider a first-author submission on a
poster to the APA Convention. If they join APA as a student affiliate and
become APAGS members (free for graduate students, +$8 for undergraduates)
and their poster is accepted, their conference registration fee will be
waived. Student affiliate cost is low: $35. See the APA student affiliate
registration information:

Even if the student does not present a poster as first author, there will
be a much reduced conference registration fee for those who want to attend.

Older Adults, Health Information, and the World Wide Web

A national conference hosted by
The SPRY Foundation, Washington, D. C.
and The University of Georgia Gerontology Center

March 25 - 26, 1999
The Natcher Center
on the campus of The National Institutes of Health
Bethesda, Maryland

In just 10 years, one-third of the U.S. population will be age 50 or older.
This "maturing market" is the fastest growing market segment and the fastest
growing group of Internet users today.

We invite you to join nearly 250 leading academic, private, and government
experts for a conference, "Older Adults, Health Information, and the World
Wide Web" to gain a better understanding of the maturing market which will
control an estimated 900 billion dollars in discretionary income. The
conference is hosted by The SPRY Foundation, Washington, D. C. and The
University of Georgia Gerontology Center. It will take place on the
National Institutes of Health campus in Bethesda, Maryland, March 25 - 26,
1999. Experts from the National Institutes of Health - National Library of
Medicine, National Institute on Aging, The Agency for Health Care Policy and
Research, The Health Care Financing Administration, and other government
agencies, as well as universities, and private and corporate organizations
from around the country will meet to share effective strategies using the
World Wide Web to reach older adults with important health care information.

The conference will be of particular interest to basic and applied
researchers in cognition and aging, clinicians, senior marketing management
for products and services for the elderly, communications managers, and
website designers.

Conference Objectives:

1. Identify the "state of the art" work being conducted to increase the
use of computers and the World Wide Web by older adults. Both (a) basic
applied cognitive aging research in this area and (b) hands-on application
through innovative demonstration projects focused primarily on the delivery
of health care information and health care provision will be included in the
discussion.

2. Isolate the current problems in health information delivery to older
adults and their caregivers and construct models via the World Wide Web to
alleviate these problems.

3. Identify key impediments which older adults currently face regarding
use of the World Wide Web to access health information. Determine solutions
to these impediments through a cross-fertilization of ideas between basic
researchers in aging and computer use and health information providers.

4. Define specific areas of future research on older adults' use of the
World Wide Web that will support functional independence.

5. Identify key individuals and institutions involved in developing these
areas of work, thus encouraging communication on this topic among basic
researchers and health information providers nationally and internationally.

Electronic Poster Boards

Two rooms in The Natcher Center will be set aside to accommodate up to 24
tabletop personal computers (PCs) that will be hooked up to the Internet via
a T3 local area network (LAN) connection. We invite attendees to display
current health information websites, particularly those that have been
designed specifically with older adults as the target audience, in addition
to other business or institutional Websites. All pre-registrants to the
conference will be provided a booklet containing forms seeking constructive
critiques for each display website. Attendees can fill out these forms at
their leisure while attending the conference. There is a charge of $250 to
display an electronic poster.

Conference Organizing Committee

The conference organizing committee is co-chaired by Russell E. Morgan, Jr.,
Dr.P.H., President of the SPRY Foundation, Washington, D. C. and Roger W.
Morrell, Ph.D., Assistant Director of the Gerontology Center at the
University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia.

Evening Networking Dinner
A fine reception and dinner for all conference attendees is planned for the
evening of March 25th at the Natcher Center. One ticket is included with
the Conference Registration fee.

I'm really pleased to see how many committed members we have. I'll be

IFA's Fourth Global Conference on Ageing, Montreal, September 4-9, 1999

Ageing in a Society for All Ages

The implication of our theme: That societies must support and must not be
destructive of any of their constituent groups. Older people, like others,
must share in the processes and benefits of society, including human rights.

Dimensions: The Conference program will be organized along two dimensions:
first, the main elements required in a good society, and second, the
elements that define or moderate such requirements in their consequences for
older people. The elements in the first dimension (A, B, C, D), which are
the organizing themes, are to be engaged in light of the elements
(sub-themes) in the second dimension (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6). (See detailed
Proposal/Abstract
Form.)

Description of Themes

A-Economic security: the option of participating in economic
processes, including employment.

B-Personal security: the provision for the determinants of physical
and mental health, appropriate housing, mobility and a healthy environment.

C-Creativity: the preservation and encouragement of creative,
artistic or spiritual development, including the option of further learning.

D-Social participation: the freedom to participate in political and
social processes - the confirmation of the full rights of the older person
in society.

Defining Sub-themes

1. Globalization of the economy: the North-South dilemma.

2. Changing technologies: communication and production.

3. Ethnic divisions in states: the special place of indigenous
peoples and minorities.

4. Relative responsibilities of the state, private enterprise, the
community and the family including the special place of women; and
variations in gender roles and in concepts of intergenerational relations.

5. The relationship between professionals, caregivers, and older
persons.

6. Priorities and methodologies of research.

Call For Proposals/Abstracts

All interested persons are urged to submit Proposals/Abstracts for
consideration for presentation in symposia, workshops,
roundtables, poster sessions or video sessions. Authors with
Proposals/Abstracts accepted for presentation must register for
the Conference. To submit your Proposal/Abstract for approval, please
complete and submit the Proposal/Abstract Form by
January 15, 1999.

Abstract

Offered in the 1999 United Nations International Year
of Older Persons, this session, the second in
a three-part series on aging, would consider the
tradition of mutual interdependence of generations,
and the "Social Contract" as constructed by Hobbes,
Locke, and Rousseau as well as Confucian
filial piety. Humanity has entered a new phase the
unprecedented era of longevity. This has
resulted in fears that society can not afford pension
and health care costs, that economies will
stagnate, generations will become divided and
gerontocracies will emerge. Such fears demand the
re-evaluation of intergenerational relationships.

This session will examine questions including what are
the elements of a modern intergenerational
contract that would specify the responsibilities each
generation has to other generations? Can
formalization of intergenerational relationship
provide a philosophic basis for appropriate social
relations and protections, as well as an equitable
allocation of resources among the generations?

Subject: FUNDING: Modular Grants, NIH
Date: Wed, 23 Dec 98 13:17:58 -500

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is expanding its use of the Modular
Grant Application and Award. In modular grant applications, total direct costs
not exceeding $250,000 per year will be requested in $25,000 increments instead
of being compiled from detailed and separate budget categories. The
implementation of modular application, review and award procedures is as
follows:

o Beginning with April 1999 receipt dates, modular grant applications will be
implemented for Small Business Technology Transfer grants, Phase I (R41), and
Small Business Innovation Research grants, Phase I (R43).

o Beginning with the May 25, 1999 receipt date, modular grant applications will
be implemented for Academic Research Enhancement Awards (R15).

o Beginning with the June 1, 1999 receipt date, modular application, review, and
award procedures will apply to all competing individual research project
grants(R01), small grants (R03), and exploratory/developmental grants (R21).

NIH and Institute/Center guidelines and Program Announcements soliciting
applications involving these grant mechanisms are being revised to reflect the
new modular grant format. Unsolicited, investigator-initiated applications
requesting more than $250,000 in any year and applications for grant activities
not specified above will be required to follow the traditional application
instructions and applicable NIH policies. Requests for Applications (RFAs)
soliciting applications of $250,000 total direct costs or less will also follow
the modular grant process. RFAs soliciting applications greater than $250,000
may be modular, at the discretion of the issuing Institute/Center(s), as
specified in the published RFA.

Subject: CONFERENCES: Midlife Workshop
Date: Wed, 23 Dec 98 15:54:28 -500

****** Summer Workshop on Midlife in the United States ******
May 31 through June 4, 1999
University of Michigan (Institute of Social Research)
Ann Arbor, MI

The Midlife in the United States Summer 1999 Workshop will be a five-day
workshop which brings together renowned researchers in the area of aging
and adult development, with graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and
assistant professors who are hoping to expand their research in the area
of aging and adult life. The purpose of the workshop is twofold: (1) to
teach young scholars about the content and structure of the newly-released
MIDUS (Midlife in the United States) survey data set, collected under the
auspices of The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Research
Network on Successful Midlife Development (MIDMAC); (2) to provide young
scholars a forum where they may present and discuss their research ideas
with senior researchers, spanning the fields of sociology, psychology,
public health, economics, and anthropology. A follow-up conference is
being planned for summer 2000, where participants from the summer 1999
workshop will present their original research based on MIDUS data, and
will discuss their work with senior researchers.

MIDMAC is an interdisciplinary research group that consists of 13 scholars
from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds. The network was
established in 1989 to study a little-known period in the life-span:
middle age. MIDMAC network members, including David Featherman (Department
of Sociology, University of Michigan), Hazel Markus (Department of
Psychology, Stanford University), and Carol Ryff (Department of
Psychology, University of Wisconsin), as well as members of the University
of Michigan faculty, including Robert J. Willis (Department of Economics)
will lead discussions on cutting-edge topics in life course research.
Discussions will focus on diverse topics such as: bridging quantitative
and qualitative methods; exploring the meaning of the "good life;"
exploring the interface between social structural factors and microlevel
experiences; and bringing "the body" (or biological factors) back into
social science research.

The program will accept 10-15 young scholars (i.e., persons who have
earned their PhDs in the last five years) for the five-day workshop. All
travel expenses, including airfare, meals, and lodging will be paid by the
MIDMAC Network of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
Applicants should submit: a vitae; a one-page summary of their past
research experience and current research interests; a writing sample
(e.g., a published paper, dissertation chapter, or seminar paper); and a
1-2 page proposal outlining the specific research question(s) they hope
to explore at the workshop. The selection committee will purposively
select participants so that a broad range of academic disciplines,
including psychology, sociology, economics, anthropology, and public
health are included.

Applications should be sent NO LATER than February 15, 1999 to: Deborah
Carr, Assistant Professor of Sociology, University of Michigan, 500 S.
State Street, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1382. For further information, call
734-763-1220, or send e-mail to carrds@umich.edu <mailto:carrds@umich.edu> .
Acceptance letters will
be sent out by April 1, 1999.

Additional information on the workshop and on the MIDMAC Network can be
found at the website http://www.isr.umich.edu/src/midus
<http://www.isr.umich.edu/src/midus> .
