GRADUATE PROGRAM IN PSYCHOLOGY
AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAMPSHIRE
The University of New Hampshire offers a doctoral degree in
General-Experimental Psychology with specialization in Developmental,
Cognition, or one of four other areas (Behavior Analysis,
Physiological,
Social/Personality, History of Psychology). Students interested in
Cognitive Aging may specialize in either Developmental or Cognitive
Psychology. The basic goal of the program is the development of
behavioral
scientists who have a broad knowledge of psychology, who can teach and
communicate effectively, and who carry out sound research in the
selected
specialty area. Although some students seek employment outside
academia,
the program is oriented toward developing the skills required by the
research psychologist who intends to become a college or university
teacher. Toward this end, graduate students (1) complete coursework
reflecting the diversity of the field of psychology, (2) participate in
a
teaching practicum during their third year, and (3) become a research
apprentice within one of the speciality areas. Students can expect to
receive assistantships that provide full funding for at least four
years,
contingent on adequate progress in the program.
To request an application, contact Ms. Donna Hardy, Department of
Psychology, Conant Hall, University of New Hamshire, Durham, NH 03824

Older Adults, Health Information, and the World Wide Web
A national conference hosted by
The SPRY Foundation, Washington, D. C.
and The University of Georgia Gerontology Center
March 25 - 26, 1999
The Natcher Center
on the campus of The National Institutes of Health
Bethesda, Maryland
In just 10 years, one-third of the U.S. population will be age 50 or
older.
This "maturing market" is the fastest growing market segment and the
fastest
growing group of Internet users today.
We invite you to join nearly 250 leading academic, private, and
government
experts for a conference, "Older Adults, Health Information, and the
World
Wide Web" to gain a better understanding of the maturing market which
will
control an estimated 900 billion dollars in discretionary income. The
conference is hosted by The SPRY Foundation, Washington, D. C. and The
University of Georgia Gerontology Center. It will take place on the
National Institutes of Health campus in Bethesda, Maryland, March 25 -
26,
1999.
Experts from the National Institutes of Health - National Library of
Medicine, National Institute on Aging, The Agency for Health Care
Policy and
Research, The Health Care Financing Administration, the Administration
on
Aging, the Centers for Disease Control and other government agencies,
as
well as universities, and private and corporate organizations such as
AT&T,
IBM, Pasteur Merieux Connaught - Rhone-Poulenc Group, Microsoft,
America
Online, Inc., Intel and others from around the country will meet to
share
effective strategies using the World Wide Web to reach older adults
with
important health care information.
The conference will be of particular interest to basic and applied
researchers in cognition and aging, clinicians, senior marketing
management
for products and services for the elderly, communications managers, and
website designers.
Conference Objectives:
1. Identify the "state of the art" work being conducted to increase the
use of computers and the World Wide Web by older adults. Both (a) basic
applied cognitive aging research in this area and (b) hands-on
application
through innovative demonstration projects focused primarily on the
delivery
of health care information and health care provision will be included
in the
discussion.
2. Isolate the current problems in health information delivery to older
adults and their caregivers and construct models via the World Wide Web
to
alleviate these problems.
3. Identify key impediments which older adults currently face regarding
use of the World Wide Web to access health information. Determine
solutions
to these impediments through a cross-fertilization of ideas between
basic
researchers in aging and computer use and health information providers.
4. Define specific areas of future research on older adults' use of the
World Wide Web that will support functional independence.
5. Identify key individuals and institutions involved in developing
these
areas of work, thus encouraging communication on this topic among basic
researchers and health information providers nationally and
internationally.
Electronic Poster Boards
Two rooms in The Natcher Center will be set aside to accommodate up to
24
tabletop personal computers (PCs) that will be hooked up to the
Internet via
a T3 local area network (LAN) connection. We invite attendees to
display
current health information websites, particularly those that have been
designed specifically with older adults as the target audience, in
addition
to other business or institutional Websites. There is a charge of $275
to
display an electronic poster. This charge does not include registration
for
the conference.
Conference Organizing Committee
The conference organizing committee is co-chaired by Russell E. Morgan,
Jr.,
Dr.P.H., President of the SPRY Foundation, Washington, D. C. and Roger
W.
Morrell, Ph.D., Assistant Director of the Gerontology Center at the
University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia.

CONFERENCES: Division 20
Social Event, APA Mtg., Aug. 1999, Bosto
|
| Date: |
Mon, 25 Jan 1999 19:16:00

|
Join us for the Annual Division 20 Social Event for APA in Boston:
BOSTON DUCK TOUR AND DINNER AT MARCHE' BOSTON
This year's Division 20 get-together is scheduled for:
Saturday, August 21, 1999 at 6 p.m.
(arrive at the Huntington Avenue side of the Prudential Center
by 5:30 p.m. for boarding).
Total cost per person is: $45 (including the tour, dinner, and all
gratuities)
The cost for Division 20 students will be subsidized by the division
and will be $25.
Here is a brief description:
First, we will have a private tour of Boston by land and water in an
amphibious vehicle, developed by the military in WWII. The tour guides
are
humorous and the tour covers a lot of the highlights of Boston,
including a
big splash into the Charles River. The tour lasts about one hour and 20
minutes; it begins and ends at the Prudential Center (near the
convention
center and conference hotels).
You can get more information about Duck Tours on the web at:
www.bostonducktours.com
An informal dinner will follow at 7:30 p.m at Marche' Boston in the
Prudential Center. We have a seating area set aside for our group. You
will be given a ticket/voucher for food, tax, and tip. You create your
own
meal from a variety of market stations including Grill and Rotisserie,
Seafood, Pasta, Pizza, Far East, Omelets, Soup, Salad, Pastry, Fruit,
Dessert, Soft Drinks, Wine, Beer, and Coffee.
Each DUCK vehicle holds 32 people. It is usually difficult to get
tickets
for this very popular tour. The Duck Tour company requires that we
guarantee the numbers and make a deposit to hold the vehicles by the
middle
of February, so we need to hear from you now!
Please e-mail, fax, or write Margie Lachman (addresses below) by
February
15, 1999 to let her know how many seats to reserve for you. We need a
firm
commitment now in order to know how many vehicles to reserve. Then
please
send a check made out to
'APA Division 20' to Margie Lachman no later than June 1, 1999 ($45 for
each Division 20 member or family member, $25 for each Division 20
student).
I hope you will join us. Family members are welcome! It should be a
great
event.
Quack Quack,
Margie Lachman

FUNDING: New NIH Review
Groups

Dear Colleagues:
As you know, the integration of the National Institute of Mental Health
(NIMH),
the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), and the National Institute
on
Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) into the National Institutes of
Health
(NIH) required integration of the review of many of the grant
applications
assigned to these institutes into the peer review structure of the
Center for
Scientific Review (CSR, formerly Division of Research Grants). This
integration
offered the opportunity to reexamine the review of all behavioral and
social
science carried out by CSR, without regard to institute assignment or
current
study section definitions.
The Behavioral and Social Sciences Working Group recommended creation
of 16 new
study sections. These have been combined with the existing Epidemiology
and
Nursing study sections into three Initial Review Groups (IRGs): (1)
Biobehavioral and Behavioral Processes (BBBP); (2) Risk, Prevention and
Health
Behavior (RPHB); and (3) Social Science, Nursing, Epidemiology and
Methods
(SNEM).
Please go to the following URL http://www.drg.nih.gov/review/bss.htm
<http://www.drg.nih.gov/review/bss.htm> for descriptions of these
new IRGs and
for more detailed descriptions of each of the new study sections.

Dear Colleague: SEARCH REOPENED: Please share this announcement
with other colleagues and recent graduates.
The Arlene R. Gordon Research Institute of Lighthouse International has
an immediate opening for a Research Associate who will serve as the
Project Coordinator of a recently NEI-funded, 5-year study of
#Depression, Disability and Rehabilitation in Vision Impaired Elders.#
The Project Coordinator will work with other members of the research
team on all aspects of the study including instrument development, data
analyses and report writing. This position will also have primary
responsibility for supervising the daily field operations including

assistants/interviewers, subject contact and scheduling, tracking
participant information, data coding, entry and database management. In
addition, the successful candidate will be expected to develop an
independent area of research and will be given all available support to
do
so. This position provides an excellent opportunity for a recent Ph.D.
or
post-doctoral fellow for career development in aging research.
Qualifications for the position include a Ph.D. in psychology, social
work,
human development or closely related field. Prior research experience,
preferably in gerontology, is required. Candidates should have
excellent

The Arlene R. Gordon Research Institute is comprised of a 15-member
multi-disciplinary research staff, and provides training for both pre-

post-doctoral fellows. We offer competitive salaries and an attractive
package of vacation, health and retirement benefits.

AWARDS: Aging and Health
Psychology Award

From: "Chiriboga, David A." <dchiribo@utmb.edu>
In case some of you didn't know it, I (David Chiriboga) assumed the
role of
chair of our (Div. 38) aging interest group on January 1, taking over
from
Alex Zautra. Hopefully, I can at least come close to the excellent job
that
Alex has done with the group.
One very immediate order of business has to do with the joint Division
38/Interest group and Division 20 Aging and Health Psychology Award.
Our
general procedure is to solicit nominations from the members of the
interest
group (nearly all of whom are also Div. 20 members as well). Eligible
nominees consist of ANY Division 20 or Divsion 38 member (i.e.,
eligible
Division 20 members do not have to also be members of Division 38, or
vice
versa, and 38 members do not have to belong to our interest group).
The nominating people have to write a shortl paragraph as to why they
are
nominating that person; then the interest group as a whole votes.
Please
forward nominations to me by Wednesday, February 10th.

Dear Colleagues:
I have received some additional inquiries about the Margret Baltes
Memorial
Fund, established to support a Gerontology Training Fellowship recently
developed by Margret Baltes and colleagues in Berlin.
Checks, drawn in US funds, may be sent, in any amount, to the
fellowship
fund. There has been a slight change in processing procedure.
Specifically, checks should be made payble to HELGA KAISER (and not P.
Baltes, as was noted in the last e-mail on this topic).
The address, reflecting this processing change, is:

On behalf of the family and colleagues, I'd like to thank all those who
have sent expressions of support.
