Dear Colleagues:

With the Fetzer Foundation, we have been interested in promoting research on
religion, health and aging topics. We have engaged in a series of planning
activities including preparing a document on measurement issues as well as
getting some relevant items on the recent social science survey. If interested,
we would be glad to send you a description of our planning efforts in this area.

We are also putting together a packet of manuscripts on religion, health and
aging topics for possible publication. If you have any publishable articles
that are ready to go that would appeal to a psychology and aging audience, we
would be pleased to see and consider passing along with the manuscripts we
already have. We do not have any guarantees regarding publication, only the
intent to send in related articles that will still need to undergo peer review.

We would need to see any proposed manuscripts by May 15, so we really are
talking about manuscripts in hand and ready to go out the door.

Research Position Available

The National Archive of Computerized Data on Aging (NACDA), located at the
University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research, announces an
immediate opening for Project Manager. For fifteen years the nation's
premier collector of social science research data collections for the study
of aging, NACDA is an important component of the infrastructure of
gerontological research. NACDA's Project Manager will be at the center of
research resource developments in the study of aging, through contacts with
leading researchers, as well as governmental and private funding sources.
For qualified individuals, the Project Manager position (further described
below) offers an unparalleled opportunity to contribute at the leading edge
of the technological and substantive changes in the ways scholars conduct
research on aging and the life course.

The Setting

NACDA is one of five topical archives within the Inter-university Consortium
for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) at the Institute for Social
Research. ICPSR, in operation since 1962, is the world's largest social
science data archive. Its holdings of basic research data broadly span the
social science disciplines, and are completely available to the research
community through the World Wide Web. Each year, thousands of academic
researchers and their students access the 40,000+ discrete data collections
in the ICPSR archive to obtain research materials for secondary analysis of
social, political, and economic phenomena worldwide. ICPSR's staff of eighty
includes a full complement of substantive and computational professionals to
support both its project activities and the research users of its
collections. The NACDA project makes full use of these internal supporting
facilities, and enjoys as well the substantive oversight of a national
council of gerontological research advisers. NACDA is funded by a multi-year
grant from the National Institute on Aging (NIA).

The Position

The NACDA Project Manager position is a regular University of Michigan
position classified as Senior Research Associate (Social Sciences). This
twelve-month appointment is located within the University's Professional and
Administrative (P&A) job family, with a salary grade of 12 within that job
family. The position carries full fringe benefits, and a salary commensurate
with qualifications and experience. As described below, the job entails a
wide variety of responsibilities, both within the organization and across
the national gerontological community. It offers to the right candidate
exciting and challenging opportunities for professional growth and
development in the field of aging research.

Duties: Manage the activities of the National Archive of Computerized Data
on Aging (NACDA) under the direction of the project's Principal
Investigator; represent NACDA in professional settings such as conventions
and through visits to leading centers for gerontological research; identify,
evaluate, and acquire data sets for use in gerontological research;
supervise staff of professional and clerical employees in archival data
processing activities; write descriptive material to inform the research
community about NACDA's data collections, including regular publications;
design and implement a "union catalog" of gerontological data sets that are
not yet archived by NACDA; prepare and present exhibits at relevant
professional meetings; assist in writing grant proposals; write progress
reports on existing grants; assist in maintaining working relationships with
sponsors in government and private sectors; engage in research and
publication that demonstrates or adds value to the NACDA collection; provide
staff support for the NACDA Council (and its task forces), which is an
advisory body composed of leading scholars in gerontology.

Qualifications: Necessary: Ph.D. in a field relevant to the study of aging
or an equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible
experience in a field relevant to the study of aging; knowledge of the
research literature and research methods in gerontology; excellent
communication skills; two or more years experience in computerized data
processing and/or data analysis in a distributed computing environment;
experience in supervising professional and clerical personnel in data
processing and/or data analysis; knowledge of social science data and
research methodology; knowledge of and experience with software such as
SPSS, SAS, or STATA for processing and analysis of quantitative data.
Desired: Experience in preparing computer-readable data and technical
documentation for secondary analysis; experience in processing or analyzing
large collections of social science research data; contributions to the
gerontological research literature.

Director, ICPSR, at 734-764-2570

research grant applications on behavior genetics in adulthood
and old age. The goal of this program announcement (PA) is to
further scientific knowledge about the relative contributions
of hereditary and environmental factors in the health, well-being,
and quality of life of adults (age 21 and over) and older persons.
This program announcement encourages research that will address
one or more of the following: a) behavior genetics and cognitive
functioning/intellectual ability, and b) behavior genetics and
personality.The mechanisms of support will be the investigator-initiated
research projectgrant (R01) and program project grant (P01).The
priorities of the National Institute on Aging (NIA) include understanding
Alzheimer's Disease and other neurodegenerative disorders associated
with aging; the biological basis of aging; the basic biological,
genetic, and environmental processes and factors associated with
aging; the aging of muscle and bone tissue; immunosenescence;
the endocrine changes that come with age; frailty, disability,
and rehabilitation; women's health and aging; balance problems;
diseases and aging; health and independence in the later years;
long-term care for older adults; aging minority populations;
osteoporosis; and the social, economic, and demographic characteristics,
as well as the work and retirement of older people. The Biology
of Aging program focuses on nutrition and metabolism, molecular
and cell biology, endocrinology and physiology, genetics, pathobiology,
and immunology. The Geriatrics Program focuses on arthritis,
rheumatologic disorders (particularly osteoarthritis); nutrition,
metabolism, and gastroenterology; cardiovascular, pulmonary,
and renal disorders; endocrinology; geriatric pharmacology and
the clinical problems in nursing homes; infectious diseases;
and cancer. The Neuroscience and Neuropsychology of Aging Program
focuses on neurobiology, neuropsychology, and the dementias of
aging.
