Replies to: Dr. Richard Hodes
I am pleased to announce the Senior Executive Service appointment of
Richard Suzman as Associate Director, Behavior and Social Research, for
the
National Institute on Aging (NIA).
We are proud of Dr. Suzman's distinguished career and his inspired and
tireless leadership in the fields of the demography and economics of
aging.
His efforts have made NIA the focal point for demographic research
across
the Federal government and internationally. His dedication to
excellence in
demographic and statistical endeavors has given the research community
and
policymakers vital national surveys that are both relevant and
reliable.
This is especially evident with the development of the Health and
Retirement
Study and the AHEAD surveys and the continuation of the National Long
Term
Care Surveys, which are breaking new ground in our understanding of a
number
of aspects of aging.
Dr. Suzman brings a broad background in social and behavioral sciences
to the associate directorship, and we welcome his skills and creative
thinking to the broader leadership of the Institute.
I know that you join me in congratulating Richard and look forward to
working with him in his new role.

Dear Div 20 members:
I am in the process of editing a book (Swets and Zeitlinger are the
publishers) entitled "Minority and Cross-Cultural Aspects of
Neuropsychological Assessment". I have nearly all chapters and chapter
authors lined up (there are 17 chapters covering 5-6 minority groups)
but am
still in need of one final chapter dealing with Neuropsychological
Issues in
Hispanic/Latino populations. Is anyone of this list available to write
such
a chapter? The publishers and I are looking for empirical chapter
contributions and chapters are tentatively required to be 2 between
25-30
manuscript pages in length. The book is likely to be published in later
1999 or early-mid 2000 (although this is still tentative). If you (or
someone you know) is interested, please contact me ASAP either via this
list
of via my own email, phone, snail mail, whatever. Thanks!

CHANGES TO NIH PEER REVIEW OF BEHAVIORAL RESEARCH GRANTS: YOUR COMMENTS
NEEDED
ACTION REQUESTED
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is seeking comments from the
extramural community on a new set of study sections designed to review
most behavioral and social science grant applications. TO ENSURE
QUALITY
REVIEW OF BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE GRANT APPLICATIONS, IT IS CRITICAL FOR
INDIVIDUAL BEHAVIORAL SCIENTISTS, SUCH AS YOURSELF, AND AOA DIVISIONS
TO
PROVIDE COMMENTS TO NIH AND APA ON THE PROPOSED NEW STUDY SECTIONS.
The deadline for comments is October 9, 1998. Descriptions of each
proposed study section can be found at
<http://www.apa.org/ppo/peer.html> by clicking on "Proposed Peer
Review
Study Sections. To ensure your comments are sent to NIH and APA please
use our direct link by clicking on "Public Comments." If you do not use
this link please send your comments to <od-behavrev@od.nih.gov>
with a
copy to <ptrubisky@apa.org>. It is important that you send a copy
to
APA so that we can track comments from behavioral researchers and
follow-up on their concerns.
BACKGROUND
NIH is overhauling its grant review system for social and behavioral
science. Sixteen new study sections will replace NIH's eight social and
behavioral review groups as well as most of the in-house study sections
of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and the National
Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). The new study sections are based on a
template created in June by a panel of 60 social and behavioral
researchers. A NIH working group will formulate the final set of study
sections this fall, based on comments they receive from the extramural
research community by the October 9th deadline. Applications meeting
the February, 1999, grant proposal deadline will be reviewed under the
new system.
QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER
Two principles were applied in designing the new study sections: (1) to
avoid institute-specific study sections by organizing review groups
around research methods or general social or behavioral topics; and (2)
to build some overlap and redundancy into the study sections so that
most grant applications could be assigned to either of two study
sections. It is critical that you let NIH and us know what YOU LIKE OR
DON'T LIKE ABOUT how behavior science applications will be reviewed
under the new system. As you read the description of the research area
each study section will review, consider the following questions:
* Can my research be appropriately reviewed by two of the proposed
study
sections?
* What composition of researchers is needed for the proposed study
section to fairly review my grant application?
* Are some lines of research poorly represented or lacking enough
"mass"
in the study sections?
* Do the new study sections allow competent review of new and emerging
areas of behavioral research?
Within your comments, it is important that you include information
about
the composition of researchers who would ideally sit on the panel. If
you suggest names of researchers to serve on these study sections,
please include their contact information (phone, fax, email address,
affiliation, and address) as well as a sentence about their area of
expertise.
For a complete overview of the NIH peer review overhaul, please consult
our website at <http://www.apa.org/ppo/peer.html>. Other more
general
information about the NIH Center for Scientific Review can be found at:

For individuals looking for a less expensive hotel option for GSA, I

they
have rates between $109 and $119 (and up) for mini- and full suites for

Call for Submissions of Teaching Materials for the World Wide Web
Dear Members of Division 20,
The Education Committee is AGAIN collecting teaching materials to be
included in the Division 20 page on the World Wide Web. These materials
will serve as resources for instructors. Faculty who have no training
in
Adult Development and Aging at community colleges, 4-year colleges, and
universities are being asked to teach courses in this area --they need
our
help!
Even seasoned gerontologists can learn fresh techniques from each
other!
The Education Committee is looking for
1. Syllabi for undergraduate and graduate courses in all areas of Adult
Development and Aging.
2. Descriptions of teaching activities, exercises, and assignments that
you
found useful in your classes.
***********************************
Please send your materials to:
Manfred Diehl, Ph.D. (address below)
***********************************
Please include your name, postal address, e-mail address, and phone
number.
In addition, please include information about the level of the class,
and
about prerequisites.
Materials submitted in electronic format, either through e-mail or on
computer diskette would be greatly appreciated. If you send them on
computer disk, please also include a paper version. If you do not have
the
materials available in electronic format, send the paper version only.
Please make sure that no copyright restrictions apply to the materials.
If
you would like to recommend a teaching activity that you have learned
from
somebody else, please ask the author for permission before submitting
it.
Manfred Diehl will review and select submissions for inclusion in the
web.
If you would like to make sure that there is a need for a particular
syllabus before you submit it, please direct informal inquiries to
Manfred
Diehl. If you would like to serve as a reviewer, please also contact
Manfred Diehl.
There is no deadline. We will continuously be looking for helpful
teaching
materials to add to the web page.

The Fetzer Institute announces the availability of funds to support
supplemental projects examining individual differences in the
experience of
pain. Because psychological factors, social factors, and factors
related to
meaning and values can play a significant role in the experience of
pain and
pain-related suffering, this request for applications emphasizes
psychosocial and psychophysiological variables associated with
individual
subjects experiencing pain. This RFA is intended to focus research
attention
to better understanding the role of individual and subgroup differences
in
the development, persistence, and exacerbation of the experience of
pain.
The Fetzer Institute intends to support five projects at up to $40,000
per
project. Letters of intent are due November 13, 1998 and applications
