How to Join the Division and APA
How to join
APA's Division 20 Your membership
will be effective immediately upon receipt of your application.
Membership in the Division is open to all members of APA who are
interested in adult development and aging. Membership currently
includes psychologists providing services to older adults,
psychologists conducting research on adult development and aging, and
psychologists simply interested in learning more about orteaching
life-span development and aging.
The Division of
Adult Development and Aging is a Division of APA and so its members
must be members of APA. If you are not already a member of APA,
indicate this on the application form. An APA membership form will be
forwarded to you. Active interest
can be evidenced by teaching, research, or psychological services with
adults through counseling, industrial placement, adult education, etc. You will become a
member upon receipt of this application with a check for $40 made
payable to APA-Division 20. Student affiliates receive reduced
dues of $25/year. You will start receiving your included journal (Psychology
and Aging), newsletters and other
materials right away. Do not send a check if you are not yet a member
of APA. The pre-eminent
journal on Adult Development and Aging, "Psychology and Aging,"
is now a member benefit, and its' cost is included in your dues. The Division 20
program during the APA convention is always balanced and well planned
with diverse interests represented and many opportunities for social
and professional interactions of members. Representatives
of the Division regularly meet with officials of
funding agencies(e.g., National
Institute on Aging) and serve as a conduit to facilitate dialogue
between those agencies and psychologists conducting research.
Representatives of the Division have testified before Congress in
support of funding for aging research. The Division enjoys a close
working relationship with the APA Science Directorate. Division members
are regularly nominated to serve on APA's Committee on
Aging.
Historically, the Division played a major role in providing
psychological expertise to
the White House Conference on Aging. Division members frequently
testify before
appropriate Congressional Committees and are actively involved in
training
and professional issues within APA. For example, the Division was
instrumental in developing and advocating for
APA's adoption of the Guidelines for
Psychological Practice with Older Adults In addition to a "Newsletter" that is sent to all members
several times a year, the Division has developed a computer-based
Network of psychologists interested in aging and adult development
(contact Michael Marsiske for
information on how to join). The Network has representatives in
academia, as well as in private practice and governmental service.
These representatives can be contacted very quickly to deal with issues
as they arise, with results and relevant information quickly
disseminated to all network members. The Division has
developed a set of teaching modules that can
be used by undergraduate psychology instructors to incorporate adult
development and aging into their undergraduate courses. A standing
committee
of the Division, the Education Committee, regularly addresses issues of
topical
interest for graduate and undergraduate instructors in the psychology
of
aging, and offers instructors sample undergraduate
syllabi,
instructional videotape and film lists, cinematic
film recommendations for classes,
and textbook lists. The Division
publishes a booklet entitled "Graduate Study in
Aging and Adult Development." This booklet lists universities
offering courses and degrees in adult development and aging along with
contact persons and descriptions of the programs. For graduate
instructors,
there are again sample graduate syllabi,
instructional videotape and film lists, cinematic
film recommendations for classes,
and textbook lists. Annually, the
Division sponsors a series of Continuing Education
workshops. Division 20 is officially recognized by APA as an approved
sponsor of Continuing Education in Psychology. A standing committee in
the Division is responsible for directing continuing education
activities. The Division
sponsors numerous annual awards. The Home Page has
become a major "one-stop shop" for information by and about the
psychology of adult development and aging and can be accessed at apadiv20.htm. In addition to the many links
shown here,
visitors can find information about how to join, archived newsletter articles, archives
of our e-mail list and an on-line directory
of list members' e-mail addresses , as well as continuing
education pages. There are several Division 20 publications
on-line, as well as the author instructions and subscription
information for "Psychology and Aging". Please enclose
$40 payable to APA-Division 20 and mail your
application to: Keith Cooke For questions
