for Parkinson’s Disease Research

Applications due May 21, 2009 (Electronic submission only).  Click here for the electronic application form.

Background

In 2007, as a tribute to Mr. Walter G. McMillen, who died with Parkinson’s disease, a joint award between APA Division 20 – Adult Development and Aging and APA Division 40 – Clinical Neuropsychology was established.  This award is designed to encourage graduate student’s interest in research on Parkinson’s disease.  Potential research topics that will be funded by this award include, but are not limited to, the assessment and treatment of persons with Parkinson’s disease, as well as the impact of this diagnosis on family support systems (e.g., caregiver burden).

Eligibility

The award competition is open to doctoral-level graduate students, who are enrolled during the 2009-2010 academic year. Only one submission per student will be reviewed each year.

The funded research proposal is expected to be conducted during the 2009-2010 academic year. To be eligible for this award, the student must initiate and conduct the project under the supervision of a professor or research advisor. The applicant is expected to be the principal investigator on the project.

Research

For the purposes of this award, the term "research" is broadly defined to include any scholarly endeavor, including but not limited to experiments, correlational studies, qualitative investigations, historical work, case studies, and evaluation research.  The focus of this research must be on the assessment, treatment, or management of Parkinson’s disease.

Research Proposal Preparation

Research proposals must include an Abstract (up to 400 words) and Research Plan (not to exceed 5 pages using 12pt font or larger), including:
  • Specific aims/hypotheses
  • Background and significance
  • Research design and methods
  • How the grant funds will be used
  • Cited literature
Submission of Proposals

Submit the proposal electronically by May 21, 2009, accompanied by a completed cover sheet, and the following supporting documents:

  • Biographical sketch (not to exceed one page), that includes in list format (a) schools attended with degrees attained, (b) relevant professional positions, (c) honors, (d) society memberships (e) publications and/or paper presentations, (f) relevant coursework, and (g) any other relevant information you would like to include.
  • Short supporting statement by the faculty sponsor verifying the nature of and the relative contribution to the research by the student submitting the proposal. This statement should be short, not to exceed one paragraph, and emailed directly from the advisor.
Judges

Proposals will be judged by qualified reviewers from Division 20 and Division 40.  The final decision regarding winners will be made jointly by the chairs of the Division 20 Awards Committee and the Division 40 Awards Committee. This committee reserves the right to withdraw an award if none of the entries are rated as superior.

The Awards

The cash award of $1000 is intended to offset direct costs associated with the planned research.  These may include salaries, equipment, supplies, stipends for study participants, etc.  Note that the monies will be awarded to the candidate’s institution and not directly to the applicant.  Indirect costs are not supported by this award.  Candidates should contact their grants office to ensure that indirect costs can be waived prior to applying for this award.
