- Relevant Information and Comments
- The Certificate Program in Gerontology, housed in the School
of Family Studies, serves students from a wide range of disciplines
across campus, including regular participation from psychology
students. The School of Allied Health Professions and Department
of Communication Sciences provide other relevant courses. We also
sponsor a Graduate Research Fellowship program which provides
indepth seminars and experience doing a major individual research
project in gerontology.
-
- The program in gerontology, as a part of the lifespan set
of programs in Human Development and Family Relations within the
School of Family Studies, is interdisciplinary and combines both
a research orientation and practical application (Marital and
Family Therapy). Also, it is closely located primarily at the
Health Center campus. The affiliations and interconnections provide
a broad grounding in the breadth of gerontology and geriatrics
while also providing a detailed exploration of aging as a part
of the lifelong process of human development.

- Relevant Information and Comments
- There are many additional resources for study of adult development
in other departments of the school of education (e.g. dealing
with organizational development), and other schools in the university
(Arts, Sciences, Medical School, Business School, School of Government,
Divinity, etc.)
-
- There are a variety of new initiatives with other Harvard
professional schools that may open up opportunities for students
with interests in adult development. The central mission of HGSE
remains related to a K12 agenda. Adult development, adult learning,
professional development, adult mental health, leadership and
adulthood, adult development and teacher training, adult development
and gender, adult development and personality theoryall exist
here, but are not the central thrust. There is not presently strong
attention to gerontological, or "aging" issues.
