How do I change my e-mail address with the listserv?

If you are CHANGING your address with PSYAGING-L, you must first follow the unsubscribe instructions for your old account, and then subscribe from your new account.

How do I send a post to the listserv?

Your message should be written in PLAIN TEXT (no styled or html text, and no attached documents).  You must use one of the approved subject headers (JOBS, STUDENTS, AWARDS, CONFERENCES, FUNDING, and INFO).

The e-mail should be sent directly to the listserv (psyaging-L@lists.ufl.edu), and not to the moderator.  The listserv system will forward it to the moderator for final approval.

Why do I need to use specific subject headers?

The headers evolved at the request of users.  It helps many users to judge the relevance of the message, and it helps (for those who use our web archive) individuals find particular types of messages. The subject headers also assist in limiting the scope of messages posted.  List users have determined that they wish to keep the focus of the list narrow and informational, rather than turn it into a broad discussion list.  So, some possible examples might be:

JOBS:  University of Erewhon, Department of Psychology
STUDENTS:  Student dinner meeting at the APA Convention
AWARDS:  Baltes Distinguished Research Career Applications Due May 1
CONFERENCES:  Conference on aging call for proposal due November 15
FUNDING:  New National Institutes of Heath Program Announcement Issued
INFO:  APA Action Alert, Call your Representative

What subject headers must I use?

  • JOBS - use this to announce any position, including faculty positions, postdocs, project coordinators, clinical positions and other industrial jobs
  • STUDENTS - use this to send messages of particular interest to student affiliates in Division 20 (e.g., room share at conferences, student sessions at conferences, graduate study opportunities at a particular university)
  • AWARDS - use this inform members of award competitions/nomination deadlines, as well as award winners
  • CONFERENCES - use this to inform members of conferences, meetings, and workgroups which may be of interest
  • FUNDING - use this to share funding announcements, both from federal and private funding sources
  • INFO - this is the "catch all" category; it is used to make announcements (including policy action alerts), inform members about testimony or legislative outcomes, solicit nominees for boards and committees, etc.
As shown above, examples of how to use these headers follow:

JOBS:  University of Erewhon, Department of Psychology
STUDENTS:  Student dinner meeting at the APA Convention
AWARDS:  Baltes Distinguished Research Career Applications Due May 1
CONFERENCES:  Conference on aging call for proposal due November 15
FUNDING:  New National Institutes of Heath Program Announcement Issued
INFO:  APA Action Alert, Call your Representative

What if I forget to use one of the subject headers?

Messages submitted without one of the subject headers will not be approved for posting.  The listserv moderator will return the message to the poster, and ask them to repost the message with one of the headers.

May I send attachments (e.g., pdf, MS-Word) to the listserv?

No.  Some user e-mail systems delete listserv messages with attachments to reduce the risk of malware.  In addition, users have asked us to reduce bandwidth by limiting attachments.  Posters with highly formatted text are asked to post such information on a website, and to include a link to the information in their messages.

Who moderates the listserv?
Beginning in September 2007, the listserv is moderated by Lise Abrams Ph.D., Associate Professor, Psychology, University of Florida.

Why is the listserv moderated?
The listserv typically receives 10-20 attempted spam postings daily.  Moderation ensures that a human monitor eliminates as much span as possible.

What is the history of this listserv?
For a brief history of the listserv, and its' lineage of moderators, please visit acknowl.htm.

I want to post a question/request for help (e.g., searching for a reference or a test or a consultant).  May I do this?

As a matter of general principle, no requests for information (e.g., finding a difficult reference, finding an out-of-print book or measure, etc.) will be posted.  The listserv is construed more as a dynamic online "newsletter" than as a discussion group.  List members have asked us to minimize general requests for information as a way of mitigating list traffic.

How may book publishers/editors/authors inform the Division about their books?

Postings from for-profit entities are generally not accepted; this includes book publishers.  However, the Division recognizes the importance of sharing timely information about new publications by and for members.  To inform the Division about new books, send your book information to the Division's textbook list.  The form for submitting your information is here.

May I endorse candidates for offices within APA?

Endorsement of APA candidates is disseminated as follows.  (A) The Executive Committee requests information from candidates using a standardized questionnaire.  (B) All responses received are posted on the Division 20 website, announced via the listserv, and published in the divisional newsletter.  The Executive Committee may choose to endorse or rank candidates.  Executive committee endorsements will be disseminated via the listserv.  At the discretion of the Executive Committee, in a given APA election cycle, single "private member" endorsements of APA candidates are also permitted.  When permitted, the "comment window" is publically announced, and will typically have a brief, fixed duration (typically two weeks).

May I endorse political candidates outside of APA?

Endorsement of political candidates outside of APA via the listserv is not permitted.

Should I be worried that spambots will capture my e-mail address via the listserv?

The risk of e-mail address capture is always present.  We use two spam mitigation measures.  First, our listserv archives conceal the addresses of posters.  Second, our publically available list of listserv member e-mail addresses uses graphical coding of the "@" symbol, which reduces the effectiveness of address-harvesting bots.

Can I "hide" my listserv postings from web archiving?

All postings to the listserv are publically archived, and linked to the Division webpage.  A "digest" option for the listserv (e.g., where e-mails are bundled and sent once a week) is not available, but persons who opt out of the listserv may view postings on the web page.  All postings are public, and are not restricted to members.

Can non-members of Division 20 join the listserv?

Non-members of the division (as well as regular members, fellows, retired members, students, etc.) may subscribe to the listserv.  The division construes this open-access policy to the listserv and its contents as (a) a recruitment tool, to inform people about the division, and (b) consistent with the policy of "giving Psychology away"
